Message from the President
Welcome to Research & Resources! This is the first issue of a magazine that combines the best of two former publications, NMSU Research and New Mexico Resources.

New Mexico State University has a broad range of programs that move beyond individual disciplines and traditional academic boundaries. Cutting-edge research at NMSU is providing the keys to cure disease as well as the science to fly travelers into space. Our scientists and researchers have provided service to the military in Iraq by developing devices that enhance their security. They also are providing consumers around the globe with renewable energy to purify their water.

Protecting our natural resources and helping to develop technologies that will provide sustainable economic development is another area of expertise found at NMSU. We are concerned with the thinning of our forests and the quality of our water supply and its preservation. Here in the desert Southwest, that is a crucial issue.

The stories highlighted in this magazine focus on some of the best and most telling work being done at NMSU. They speak to the university’s dedication to making a difference in the world through education, research, extension education, public service and economic development.

As a land-grant and Hispanic-serving university, NMSU has a unique role to play when it comes to research and finding relevant solutions to the problems and needs of our time. The uniqueness is furthered by the fact that NMSU is only 40 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border. Because of that, we are involved in international research and education in a very personal way.

NMSU research and resources touch the lives of real people in everyday situations. We hope this magazine provides you with a window to how that happens and that you will continue to be interested in and supportive of our programs.
