Electrical engineering students at New Mexico State University are programming artificial intelligence into a remote-controlled helicopter to develop a truly autonomous, or self-directed, helicopter. The project is funded by White Sands Missile Range and NewTec, a Defense Department contractor. Lockheed Martin plans to build a full-scale model of the NMSU prototype once it is completed. The autonomous helicopter is being built in NMSU’s RioRoboLab, a NASA-funded laboratory that is working on a variety of projects that combine robotics and artificial intelligence systems. Shown here are students Matt Pendergraft and Steven Roberts, along with Nadipuram Prasad, an associate professor in the Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
